Hula Girl Dress Tent

The Hula Girl Dress Tent brings the iconic and popular souvenir of the dashboard hula dancer to life in an immersive, large-scale installation. Complete with coconut shell bra, a plastic lei, and a huge motorized grass hula skirt, the Dress Tent and performer are seemingly set in motion by the mechanized hula girl’s swaying hips.

While the Dress Tent’s exterior exaggerates the stereotype of the hula dancer by making her larger than life, the tent’s interior explores a more complex culture, where the seen and unseen live simultaneously. The tent interior brings in the element of storytelling that is ever-present in hula by sharing the history of Dinah Gomes Sylvester Pao (artist Adrienne Keahi Pao's tutu, or grandmother), who spent many years training in hula and being partially raised by Aunty Keahi in the Kaka’ako area of Honolulu. The search for Aunty Keahi, explored inside the tent, is an exploration of family roots, a yearning to better understand ourselves through diasporic identity, and to explore the third space where hybrid identities in the 21st century are multifaceted.

và một chiếc váy hula cỏ có động cơ khổng lồ, Lều ăn mặc và
người biểu diễn dường như đang chuyển động bởi hula cơ giới hóa
lắc lư hông của cô gái.

Trong khi bên ngoài của Dress Tent làm tôn lên khuôn mẫu của
vũ công hula bằng cách làm cho cô ấy lớn hơn cuộc sống,
nội thất khám phá một nền văn hóa phức tạp hơn, nơi người ta nhìn thấy và
vô hình sống đồng thời. Nội thất lều mang lại
yếu tố kể chuyện luôn hiện hữu trong hula bằng cách chia sẻ
