Machine pieced, hand embroidered and tied, “Cigarette Silk”, Tobacco Premium Quilt is dated to c. 1910. pieced silk rectangles of blue and red are interspersed with tobacco premiums - off white silk with flags of all different nations printed onto them. The seams have been embroidered with feather stitch and the pieced top has been backed with solid blue silk.
Made by Maude Neidig, who lived in Canada until 1912, when she and her husband adopted Rosalie Winnicott (8 years old) and, with her son of a previous marriage, moved to Santa Cruz, California in 1912.
