Despite the awareness that halved images are a difficult composition, I was attracted to the juxtaposition of the two surfaces. It was a challenge to give the light, upper half enough texture and presence to counterbalance the gray smooth lower half.
The resting surface of the top takes on the gentle movement of the gray bands. It's a harmonious, low-contrast painting with muted colors and subtle nuances. It invites the viewer on a journey of discovery across the surface of the painting, sensitizing him to the little and less of color, structures, cracks and textures.
