The title is inspired by a song by Ben Howard. In the song there is a line "All these small things they gather round me..." which seemed to express in words what I was aiming to achieve in this work.
In the painting there are expansive skies and towering clouds that offer a contrast to a small and delicate butterfly as well as the more macro details of a garden in full bloom. As with all my work I wanted to impart the essence of light, while at the same time giving a sense of being carefree and not too meditated, focusing mainly on the finer details such as the butterfly.
I have recently been experimenting on painting multi-panels (usually consisting of four panels that make up one large composition) and in this work I decided to create four separate compositions on one canvas. The desired effect is to have various separate realities, where one seems to spill into the next.
