Spread sparsely throughout south west WA, the red-tailed black cockatoo is now vulnerable due to habitat loss and competition for nest sites with introduced animals. We are lucky to have them visit our home regularly, especially when the Cape Lilac has seeds, a new source of food for them.
I’ve made this piece in homage to them and used a piece of jarrah tree that was a casualty of a recent fire on our property and which they formally sat on. Their Noongar name, Kaarak, means black feathers. Kaarakin is a conservation centre for black cockatoos in Perth.
This piece is made by fusing frit in a hand-cut fibre mould, then assembled with silicon.
