This piece is an homage to Lago Maggiore in north Italy where my dad came from. We used to go every year from England on holidays. I always felt at home there – it tugged at my heart, it’s the land of my roots. I loved going to the Borromeo Islands in the lake, especially Isola Bella with its white peacocks and grottos. This piece represents the ancient stone carvings in bas relief that are everywhere in Italy, often so old that they are worn, with lichen growing on them.
It is made by first boiling the glass then slumping over fibre paper, grinding and polishing the high points back to reveal the layers below.
