Often it is only after a painting is finished that I feel its emotion and its message becomes clear. Other times, its meaning remains hidden even from me, patiently waiting to be reflected in the eye of the beholder; a private message meant for their eyes only.
Fifty-plus layers of purified beeswax, earth pigments, and fir-tree sap damar are painted on Russian Baltic birch panels in the ancient and alchemic art form of Encaustic. The unseen details in this compelx and labor-intensive process creates patina and texture that is storied, translucent and luminous.
