Dark Nostalgia was almost called Rose Colored Glasses. The rose motif is obvious. However, I also was conscious that the time period represented by many of the materials used in this piece is considered "the good old days" by some when it was extremely painful for others. Papers in the piece were harvested from teaching magazines from the 50s and 60s, as schools were integrating. However, all the students and teachers in the magazines were white. Metals in the work are various types and colors of copper, oxidized by several methods, and sulfured, as a sort of homage to the fact that humans are the same metal underneath. Although I had a message in mind when I made this piece, it should also function as an abstract floral: interesting, beautiful, different.
