There comes a time in a person's life when they would like to be the best and most honest part of themselves. At the age of 32 I began that journey. The butterfly had to emerge. Over these past 20 plus years that has been happening and I have learned to allow it to continue to happen. My artistic practice has evolved over time, with some, consistencies. I have always been interested in the found material, ideas of beauty, color relationships and making a object and or the construction of a composition. But the foundation of my practice is the question, the question of what to make, how to make, and what materials do I want to use. What has evolved, is what do I want to say. Right now there is so much talking, so now I am listening. I am listening to the work and allowing it to guide me. Sometimes I may use concepts of painting sometimes sculpture sometimes both. At this time I am not focused on the narrative as much as I am focusing on the relationships of substrate and a medium, I am more concerned with intention. My intention now is to make thought provoking work, to push the limits of the medium through the concepts of abstraction. I am researching African American abstractist that came before me as well landscape artists that not only challenged the viewer but also encouraged thier peers. I am excavating the black abstractionist practices, allowing my work to build upon the questions they were asking, so now my work becomes my thesis.
