My painting is a compulsive and spontaneous expression of my reaction to the natural play of light, shadow, color, and shape in the world of nature. Water’s Edge … I believe that painting is such a personal expression of my existence that it is hard to separate “me” from my work. My work was at one time strictly representational until 1962 when I began to experiment with watercolors, acrylics and mixed media taking my themes from nature but abstracting them. Water’s Edge is such a piece taking its theme from the sea in Charleston, SC where I spent my childhood seeing the ships come and go in Charleston Harbor. My father was a solicitor of freight for the Southern Railway and I went along with him to the docks checking on cargoes. The love of the sea began early and has never left me. I love living in the Piedmont but miss the activities involved around the waterfronts.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
