This work is based on the African coil-building method of forming as well as a primitive firing technique used in both Africa and the western United States. Surfaces are layered, alternately, with stains and scraped with various tools leaving a variety of marks. Visually, for me, the piece is a combination of layers of time, people and the marks they make as their memories.
