“Benches (1977) is part of a series of prints and drawings in which I set out to visually re-examine questions involving varied aspects of time, reality and existence as they concern me personally. By projecting human qualities onto the inanimate, another direction from which to approach this philosophical inquiry is provided. Divorcing these attributes from the realm of human experience places one in a position of an impartial observer rather than a biased participant. In short, the environment and the objects within it are treated as existing independently of man, yet are handled in such a way as to symbolize the human condition.”
