Tom Patterson on Richard Burnside
Excerpt from Kentucky/South Carolina Exchange catalogue essay, 1991
Richard Burnside’s boldly colored and patterned, symmetrically ordered paintings of crudely stylized human and animal figures is a striking example of the “outsider” art for which the South has become famous over the past fifteen years. His work suggests the influence of African art and decorative traditions and curiously enough, bears a coincidental resemblance to traditional Australian Aborigine art.
