“Variety in my artistic efforts has involved the use of oils and lacquers in the production of frame paintings and expansive murals of ink and pen in line illustrations and pictorial renderings, and of watercolor as exemplified in The Mill Pond. Regarding subject matter, I have relied in recent years to an increasing extent on memory etchings of past observations, replacing the earlier techniques associated with the direct interpretation of nature and artificialities on board paper. This innovation has prompted and permitted me to revise and regroup the elements in a watercolor to a greater extent than was formerly practicable, to help me discard the nonessentials, to effect maximum emphasis on color and composition and appeal. The watercolor drawings I now paint usually reveal and emphasize what I feel, what I like best to recollect of scenes and effects long since past.”
