My work tends to be abstracted from nature. It deals with the general rather than the particular. Work is prompted by the beauty in a universe created by God. Every weed or rock is worthy of artistic consideration. I try not only to examine the nature of things but to give them some uplifting meaning. Feeling Free – Appalachia is much lighter in nature and has a happy, free mood about it. The concept and execution are primitive (childlike), painted quickly and in a ‘shoot from the hip’ style. It is for the most part spontaneous. It draws on years of experience for control and composition without conscious thought. Again, it is supposed to have a definite light and dark pattern which holds the composition together. It is like an Appalachian quilt.
