For the past several years I have been working with thin clay slabs, pinching them together yet retaining the linear quality of the individual strips. The pieces relate essentially to folds or folding. In the movement of bending the soft slab, I capture the spaces in between. After some experimentation I found that a low temperature raku firing and smoking allowed the pieces, such as Faltung, to keep a vestige of their original softness – lost at stoneware temperatures.
