I work in the medium of collage and use torn and cut papers pasted onto mat board. Papers are drawn and painted to my specifications, though some are found. I think of my work as an immediate response to my environment, reflecting feeling about places, sights and atmospheres. I explore subject matter, thematically, and stimulus comes from very transient images and ideas as well as the more studied responses.

While the literal connection with landscape is undeniably present in some pieces, the expression of personal thoughts is a prime concern. ‘Double entendre’ fascinates me – the ambiguity of situations that we find ourselves in. I attempt to describe difficult, intangible ideas by intuitively manipulating the compositional relationships of the papers and their colors, shapes, lines and textures until such feeling are made manifest in the work.

Coming from a background of art education that emphasized the importance of representational drawing and painting skills my work became abstract by a gradual process of development. I still consider drawing to be an important activity and enjoy using it as an active way of enabling me to ‘see further’ in my work.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
