“METROPOLIS” has many allusions to previous paintings, with a gridded style the artist has dabbled in, now on display in bright primary red, blue, and yellow: this is a metropolis, and these are its structures. The maplike design created by various dripping inks evokes, of course, the “METROPOLIS”: the mega-city, the urban, the chaotic, the busy, the bustling. The grid mimics the often gridded pattern of cities, and the word itself exists as a tall tower leaning against the left side of this skyline.
