They flutter about, wings beating up to 85 times per second and hearts racing at 1200 beats per minute. Flying at speeds up to 35mph they have an enlarged brain connected to a huge number of retinal cells (45,000 cells per mm) that allow them rapid flight navigation and immediate directional maneuvering to avoid predators and to consume insect and sugars from thousands of flowers every day. Their large cornea allows them to fly at night. Their incredible adaptations allow them to devour thousands of tiny insects daily which are converted into the beautiful and amazing structures of their magnificently beautiful bodies.
I pursued hummingbirds for three evenings, remotely snapping images from a stationary tripod, shooting at 1/4000th of a second. After several thousand shots I had about twenty that were usable.
