Artist: Ajax Axe
During the nearly two month sit-in outside the military headquarters in Khartoum, artists made numerous murals that helped forge a new national identity for people in Sudan. Artists had been jailed and harassed for making work during the old regime and art became one expression of Sudan's new sense of freedom.
Ajax Axe is an artist, writer and activist who has been visiting Sudan since 2008. Ajax documented and supported these artists and their mural projects and others during the sit-in in Khartoum. Her next project in Sudan is an art train which will be a nomadic artists' workshop, library and gallery that will travel around Sudan offering people in rural areas better access to the arts.
