Contemporary Welsh landscape artist Sarah Jane Brown will open a new exhibition of paintings at Off The Wall Gallery in Cardiff, from 27th October until 21st November. Her solo exhibition 'Blurring time and tide' opens at 10am on Saturday 27th October, where there will be the opportunity for visitors to meet Sarah Jane and discuss her work.
Inspired by personal recollections of the coast, Sarah Jane's latest work explores the intense yet fleeting nature of memory and its effect upon the present.
"Thoughts come and go like the reflections of clouds passing by on the wet sand or like the flotsam and jetsam washed over the rocks with the tide. Forgetting the everyday, letting everything go and just absorbing the moment allows memories to come, ephemerally, like the sea washing in and out and leaving marks on the landscape. The details don't matter, what matters is the feeling; the sound of the sea, the gulls, the wind, the smell of the salt in the air, the feel of the elements on your skin, and the thoughts that pass through your head when you're standing on a beach or a cliff top."
Combining a mix of ‘old master’ and contemporary techniques, Sarah Jane's rich and expressive style uses a variety of methods; staining, glazing and blending in many layers, gradually building up thickness and texture. Conceptually her paintings are an outpouring of personal feeling and a strong sense of place; the landscape becoming a metaphorical vehicle to describe more emotional concerns.
The exhibition takes place at Off The Wall Gallery, a beautifully refined Victorian building situated in Llandaff, Cardiff. Friendly and relaxed, the gallery provides a calm and peaceful space to view Sarah Jane's latest work. Sarah Jane has exhibited widely across the UK, and her work is now collected internationally. An Associate Member (AGSA) of The Guild Society of Artists, her notable highlights include exhibiting with the Royal Society of Marine Artists at London's Mall Galleries, and the Royal Cambrian Academy in North Wales.
Current and upcoming UK events include exhibiting at the Russell Gallery's Summer Show in Putney, London until 8th September and exhibiting at Off The Wall Gallery's Christmas Show, 22nd November until the New Year. Upcoming international events include exhibiting at the Artbaho Contemporary Art Fair in Barcelona, 22-26th September, followed by a show at the Art Nou Millenni Gallery in Barcelona, exhibiting
at the Museum Gustavo Maetzu in Navarra, North West Spain in December 2018, followed by a further show at the Art Nou Millenni Gallery in Barcelona early in 2019.
