These pieces were a part of a Water Symmetry Meditation Series, where I studied how I could create different patterns within moving water. I'm fascinated with finding patterns in the movement, as I find my mind can relax while my eyes softly meander across the surface. I altered photographs of rippling water to have mirrored images in the composition and played with different ways of sculpting the surface to see how the glaze would move across the tile and change our perception of the patterns.
The tiles were created by designing the forms using computer aided design, then sculpting molds using a Computer Numeric Controlled Router. I pressed clay slabs onto the molds and glazed with a custom glaze that highlights edges and pools in valleys.
The pieces hang on low-profile metal french cleats and come with an easy hanging template.
