Part I of Questions for my Mother, “Forgive Me” is an outright expression of anxious emotion. Sunshine yellow peeks through emerald green leaves and teal waves. Dark blue shadows and white columns add more contrast, and the hasty application suggests distress. Gold piping paint adorns the canvas, along with many gold embellishments: flowers, leaves, arrows, moons, etc. “Forgive Me” is spelled in cutout letters down the left side. The center begs “why now?” and claims “mania”. Spelled upside down along the top and bottom are “patience” and “virtue”. This is raw emotion, captured grief, documented mania.
