From the series My Grandmother's Table
I am in the possession of a handful of treasured objects from my great grandparents, my grandparents and my father. I use them intermittently throughout all of my paintings. When I began this series of paintings I gathered just a few of these objects and as I arranged them I was reminded of my grandmother's table: always a table cloth, beautiful dishes and a centerpiece. She was consistent in how she served certain foods in a certain dish, the table being a beautiful composition of my Nan's making. It always looked so full yet not overcrowded. I can't leave out how delicious everything looked either. There was a casual formality. I loved sitting at her table. It was a portrait of her.
My Grandmother's Table is a series of paintings that function not only as still life but also as portraits: "Object Portraits", where the object represents that person by having belonged to them or having a story related to them. These are portraits of dear people and places that no longer exist. The experiences that we shared have shaped the way I view the world.
