This elegant piece, titled Ocean Swirl reflects the idea of plankton in the open ocean, most that drifts with the currents in a variety of shapes and textures. Great as a showpiece on a main wall in any room, be it a commercial location or in a home. The captivating depth of the glaze layers make this a piece to study with all its detail.
Fifteen 6.1" x 6.1" square tiles made of white earthenware, a low-fire clay, laid out in place, carved, with a thick slip applied in designs that span the tiles. After the construction process, the tiles, slowly dried to prevent cracking and warping, were bisque fire to 1850ºF. Black slip was added to select areas and over this, a series of commercial glazes were layered. The red glaze was waxed to resist the other blue-green-white overlaying layers, keeping the red over the black slip pure and prevent intermingling with the other glazed layers. After the glaze firing, each tile was mounted with glue onto smaller, ¼" thick black-painted wood squares to elevate the tiles on the full-panel, black painted parent board, which is framed in a brushed silver frame. The selected frame was configured with side buffers to have the front of the tile and frame be on the same plane.
