- Barbara Sussberg
Sussberg explains, "this painting belongs to a new series which employs a technique I've developed over time. In it, I combine very dense layers of paint applied with my palette knife - carving, scratching and staining. I've had a long-standing fascination with the odd beauty of aging, decaying walls found in very old cities, and that has been an inspiration in developing this painting process."
"I actually created my own paint from pure pigments bought during a trip to Venice, Italy. I've used this medium to create a staining effect pioneered by the painter Helen Frankenthaler, who is best known for her colorfield paintings."
Barbara Sussberg is a critically acclaimed native Westchester artist whose abstract works evoke a serene sense of the sea and nature with silver and gold undertones. Her intuitive sense of color and her ability to create textural effects from painting with a palette knife combine to achieve oil paintings that seem at once dimensional, watery and multi-layered. As the Washington Post Art Critic recently wrote of her work – “The basic elements could hardly be simpler, yet the result is complex.” Her paintings have been widely exhibited in the South and the Northeast and can be found in private collections throughout the US.
