Table top version of Antonio Canova's 18th century sculpture. On a marble demi-lune base.
The original "Cupid's Kiss" was commissioned in 1787 and resides in the Louvre. It is much larger at 61" by 66" and designed to be seen from all sides. To accomplish this Canova included a handle near one of Psyche's feet to help rotate
the base.
This smaller version differs in a number of subtle ways, such as the absence of Cupid's arrow and the box of beauty that Psyche was bringing back from the Underworld for Venus. She decided to sample it herself. When opened, the jar released "The Sleep of Innermost Darkness." Cupid is in the act of reviving her with a kiss.
