Proclamation of Jesus' Resurrection

In the 1950s the Chapel of Saint John the Evangelist on Cass Street installed four beautiful stained-glass windows funded by generous families. The pieces were designed by local artisans from the Arnold Gavin Glass Studio. They remained there until 1979 when they became part of the new chapel of the Prospect Avenue campus. For 25 years, the legacy continued. In 2002 a remodeling project began which included plans to expand and replace the chapel.

During the renovation, Tom Du Pree, the former Engineering Services Manager, saved the windows from the salvage yard. Although there were no plans to incorporate the stained glass in the new chapel, he knew that they would have a place of honor one day. Tom stored them on his porch for over a decade until 2014 when they returned to Saint John's. After many discussions, the windows now have a permanent home in the Chapel. We are grateful to resident Alice Nelson who donated the necessary funds to install the windows in memory of her husband, James W. Nelson Jr. Today the windows are highly valued and have a prominent place to call home. These pieces may have been lost without Tom and his vision for our community.
