Broad strokes carve through raw canvas like rivers through stone — fierce, unbound, alive. Beneath our surfaces, the wild currents of the heart shape raw landscapes: valleys torn by longing, streams swollen with memory, lakes deep with joy and sorrow. Every mark bears witness to the elemental currents that break us open, stitch us back together, and push us forward.
This piece is especially meaningful to me because it includes paint I made from the infamous red clay I gathered in my uncle’s backyard in Georgia, where I grew up. He was quite a character—sharp, funny, and full of unforgettable stories—and he played a big role in nurturing my creativity. He’s no longer with us, but during one of my last visits, I scooped up some of that iconic red clay in an old pickle jar and brought it home. I later ground it down and turned it into pigment. The deep maroon you see in this painting holds the spirit of that place—and a little of him, too.
