Ryan Cobourn’s gestural abstract paintings are based on memories and experiences of the figure, the landscape, and the garden. The allusions and references remain slightly out of reach. There is a physical, tactile play between the veiling and exposing of forms with creamy, viscous paint, which can feel agitated, tender, and melancholic all at once.
Cobourn is represented nation-wide by Bryant Street Gallery, Ann Connelly Fine Art, and Carrie Coleman Fine Art. He received his MFA at Indiana University where he studied with Tim Kennedy and Barry Gealt. He has been the recipient of multiple awards and grants including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant. He recently retired from life in Brooklyn, New York after fifteen years. He currently lives on Long Island, New York with his family.
