During Davis's early days at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1963, art materials were hard to come by. While living at the studio-residence he shared with other artists, the old Primalon roller rink, Davis found a round chair-bottom frame, stretched canvas over it, and painted it with acrylics. He would return at the age of 84 to this optical style, painting with acrylics on tondos of various sizes.
