Dr. Irina Stotland judge's remarks:
As art historians, we have yet to find a definition of art that satisfies everybody. In my work I have to settle for a nebulous “aesthetic object that is produced by human hands.” However, the idea of an aesthetic object is also elusive - it is defined by relativity, by the notions of taste and beauty in each culture.
My criteria in selecting the works of art in our exhibition were therefore, both subjective - the beauty of evoking emotions, and objective - the beauty of the demonstrated skill. Both are a matter of practice and a matter of intent, both are important. Yet, conveying a feeling, affecting a viewer is no small feat and, is, in my opinion, the defining mark of a good artist.
The range of artworks I was privileged to see - from subtle and nuanced to vivacious and saturated in color, from sensitive to strong in painterly gestures, from poetic to declaratory in their emotional charge - was incredibly impressive. Whether or not you find your piece in the exhibition, please continue developing your interest in art.
