Judge's Comments: This painting wowed me with the sunlight breaking through the tree branches and creating that familiar fire like glow. The long diagonal cold blue tree shadows pulled me to the figure at the top. I saw the familiar marks in the snow that are made when trying to push off to get started down the hill. The position of the mittens along with the soft edges around the figure made me feel the snow. The blurred figures in the distance are fantastic. Painting four figures in motion with snow flying around them with only a few brushstrokes is remarkable. When the viewers eyes finish the image and turn brushstrokes into people, it is the work of a highly skilled painter. Albeit, what moved me the most about this painting was that it had heart. It is alive. It has voices squealing and echoing through the winter stillness, the evidence of humans making their marks in a blanket of snow, gave it a heartbeat.
