I have always been fascinated by the story of Persephone and the red of the pomegranate seeds. I painted some of these red poppies on site and the composition became like a Grecian frieze in some ways because of my low perspective in the garden. I wanted the red poppies to stay as glowing red as possible so there are many layers. The six red poppies represent the six pomegranate seeds that she consumed and so she emerges in spring according to the myth.
