On a recent trip to California I witnessed several otters cuddling their babies while floating in the frigid waters of the Pacific. I learned that otter moms keep their babies with them for six months while they teach them to dive for food and swim. For the first several months of their lives, otter pups can't swim, and moms wrap them in kelp to keep them afloat while they dive for food. These amazing and adorable creatures live most of their lives in the water, represented here by the variegated glass tiles holding the sculpture made with earthenware clay and glazed with velvet underglazes.
