Judge’s notes: There is a lovely sense of peace in this painting. The dark pot balances the light coming through the window as well as the beautifully backlit leaves of the plant. The warmth of the light is felt on the windowsill and the very subtle brushstrokes on the rim of the pot along with some unexpected color placement. What I love about this painting is the meditative quality of it. There is an organic elegance in artist’s handling of the plant, a careful eye.
Artist’s notes: A favorite plant and a sunny window were what grabbed my attention in this still life. I love the deep reds and oranges of Prince of Orange philodendrons. Young leaves are colorful and then become more green with age.
