'HENDRIX' . 57" x 76" . Acrylic & Inks on Cut Canvas Panels Mounted on Textured Hand Stretched Black Canvas . 2017
Can you see him?
Often I don't understand the painting - the reason 'for' a painting. Why it wants, or in the case of 'HENDRIX,' has a spirit of sorts that NEEDS to be ex-pressed, released into this world.
As I had that long 12' sheet of canvas with glorious color and texture on the floor, and then hung for a week as I worked on it, I wondered why it seemed so 'powerful!'
I was deciding how to crop the work for the stretcher bars but it was still too strong; I just couldn't contain that much energy within one frame. Next thing I knew I was cutting it up into 12 pieces, almost in some kind of a trance. Then I proceeded to create a larger piece of canvas, painting it jet black with faint texture and detail so light would absorb rather than reflect. Again, not sure why. I stretched the larger canvas and mounted the smaller panels in a loose fashion.
About six months after completing this piece I still hadn't titled it, as I didn't really understand it. I was working in the studio, the painting hung on a far wall in my gallery, and I turned around and I SAW HIM, clear as day. Jimi Hendrix decided to introduce himself to me.
Now every time I see this painting I understand why I had to cut it up, as there was far too much energy to have it contained within a single canvas. It was too powerful, had too much energy to be contained as one painting. I believe a little bit of his energy lives within this painting.

SPOILERS...
Imagine him, portrait wise, see his head, looking sideways, to the left, black beard, can you see his nose? Sparks coming off it. Blue head band, brilliant-colored hat with legendary feathers and long strands of glowing beads flowing down his back and side of his head and face. He's life sized, over 7' tall.
