"Chautauqua" was a cultural and social movement that started in upstate New York in the 1870's and flourished until the mid 1920's. The original Chautauqua movement was founded by Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent as a teaching camp for Sunday school teachers based on the four pillars of Arts, Education, Recreation, and Religion. Theodore Roosevelt called it "the most American thing in America."
