Roiling Emotions by Robin Luker, Image 1.
In medical terms; when you experience strong emotions, your brain triggers a "fight-or-flight" response, flooding your system with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This causes your heart rate to spike, breathing to quicken, and muscles to tense as your body instinctively prepares for action. It feels like roiling tempest. Like a whole hurricane somehow fits inside your chest. Or like a boy scout bonfire with flames 6 feet tall. It's so incredible to be able to feel so intensely. Even more incredible when one is powerful enough to diffuse or overcome it.
