Impressionist figurative oil painting on paper of a dark haired woman facing away with a yellow bird.
Alice Nutter was a widow from a wealthy family, who owned land. She was in a property dispute with the magistrate Roger Nowell - the man who spearheaded the witch hunt. She was spotted by Malkin Tower one evening, while on her way to a Good Friday Catholic service, which was illegal at the time. A 9 year old girl accused her of plotting to kill Henry Milton. She refused to speak other than saying she was not guilty because she didn’t want to get the other Catholics in trouble.
