Flor de Vida
- Acrylic, Aluminum, and Motion Sensors
- Daniel Sol Villanueva
“Flor de Vida” (Flower of Life) is an interactive and dynamic large-scale flower sculpture designed to captivate viewers and encourage engagement. Standing at 13.5 feet tall, this oversized flower is crafted from durable, weather-resistant acrylic and supported by a fabricated aluminum structure. The installation responds to human interaction through motion sensors embedded near the flower's base, triggering the petals to open and close as people pass by."
"Inspired by the Blue Flax flower native to the western United States, “Flor de Vida” celebrates endurance and beauty in the face of adversity. The Blue Flax thrives despite harsh environmental conditions such as drought and poor soil quality. Its strength mirrors the fortitude of individuals and communities who adapt, grow, and flourish through life’s challenges."
"This concept is particularly fitting for Roanoke, a city shaped by its natural environment, rich history, and vibrant culture. Just as the flower finds a way to bloom regardless of its surroundings, Roanoke continues to evolve, embodying innovation and creativity. The sculpture invites people to pause, interact, and offer a visual metaphor for the strength and imagination of the community."
About the artist:
As an interactive designer and artist, Daniel Sol Villanueva combines art and technology to create installations that invite people to connect with each other and their environment.
