“We can’t do anything if we don’t have access to clean water, a livable climate, clean air, and food.” These words spoken by green activist and Roanoke resident Terry McGuire, emphasize his passion for the natural world and his work to make Roanoke a greener and more enjoyable place to live.

Fleck painted McGuire, a partner on projects in her Old Southwest neighborhood. She is an active gardner, volunteer, advocate, and amateur botanist. In her portrait, she draws upon classical allusions including Sylvanus, the protector of the forest and Oberon from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
