This community mural was made to slow down traffic and provide a safer street and a better quality of life for residents. Artist Simone Paterson led the design development process in which she worked with young people through her Dreamin Big Art Program at the neighboring EnVision Center of the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
The mural depicts large handprints and Roanoke stars based on the designs received from young people through her program. Along with the mural, several safety improvements were made such as an accessible bus stop, extended curbs, and high-visibility crosswalks. The safety improvements as well as the mural were made possible through a coalition of community organizations and the City who wanted the area to be safer for the community. On paint day, three dozen volunteers pitched in to help paint. Now the area has been seeing changes in how safe the street is for the drivers and the surrounding community.
