- Indiana Limestone
The sculpture grouping entitled "Caring" and "Strength" by artist Don Lawler contains several sculptures including seating areas and a fountain. Lawler carefully sculpted these pieces out of Indiana Limestone. the benches “Caring” and “Strength” were a project commissioned by the City of Roanoke and the Roanoke Arts Commission. Out of the many applicants, artist Don Lawler was selected to make public art benches for the park. The National Humane Alliance gifted the stone fountain that represented human compassion, specifically towards animals. In his proposal, Lawler stated that the bench “Caring” mirrors that sentiment, as the semi-circular composition alludes to the hemispherical vessel. He said it invites the viewer to find comfort within its enclosing grasp.” Within “Strength” are playful organic forms that hold up a polished, rectangle, square, and level. This ties the sculpture to the architectural element of the community. The lifting composition creates the impression of Endurance, Tenacity, and Resolution.” "Caring" and "Strength" are located within Highland Park.
