In New York on May 18, 2001, pictures of this mask were shown to Jean Frist of the Tribal Arts department at Sotheby's. Her opinion was that it came from Mali or Burkina Faso--possibly Marka or Bamana. On May 22, 2001, the pictures were shown to Jerry Vogel at the Museum for African Art in New York. He also suggested Mali or Burkina Faso and Marka or Manana.
