Painters often "talk" to other artists through their work, the ways in which it responds to or even reacts against the other's work. It is mostly friendly and respectful -- certainly, in my work, these references are intended humorously and not critically. In this instance, I might equally have addressed the memo to P.M., although the meaning would then have been different.
The painting was never stretched so I have fitted it with battens top and bottom to allow it to be rolled up for convenient transport. The dark, tropical hardwood battens contribute a partial framing effect, which enhances teh work, in my opinion.
