Fish Ripples I Limited Edition of 8
Two types of fish fill a sunlit pool criss crossed by ripples. The fish tessellate the surface perfectly, forming an aperiodic pattern of sunlight and shade. Each fish comes in two varieties with the ripple either across the body, or along the length of the body, as the fish are placed together, the complex ripple design emerges.
Coloured in blue and blue-green, the ripples are picked out in gold leaf, applied by hand in Central Java by textile craftsmen, making each piece of this print a unique artwork.
The ripples are not an arranged design, but are naturally formed by the rules of the tiling which embodies a new plane-filling curve. The tiling is formed from 2 Penrose rhombs with 2 types of marking for each tile. The pattern is generated by a substitution process, and can grow infinitely large as the process continues. The pattern is reminiscent of ripples in the sand caused by the tide - a pattern also produced by a repetitive process without a designer.
