These muscular tail-less lizards have completely covered their strange square island in Eastern Indonesia. The lizards have a unique lifecycle, they are social creatures that form a linear maze for catching their prey. There is only one way onto the island, at the middle of the southern shore, and one exit, to the east. Unknown to science, no explorer has ever made it out of the maze alive. Based on a space-filling curve, this tessellation, like Flow Fish II, successfully describes the curve with the creature – head to tail, they trace the curve, and completely fill the plane.
There are 2 types of tiles, a tile that turns the corner, and a tile that goes straight through. The tiles occur in both mirrored form and in 2 colours. The maze pattern is created by careful tonal values, with brighter areas along the path and darker areas to the perimeter. The maze is very apparent when the print is viewed from a distance. Up close, our eyes and brains are more focused on the details, and the maze pattern does not read strongly.
This is the second version of the design. Komodo Flow I was an early print which I gave to Sir Roger Penrose in 2012.
