Against the night sky, a firefly follows a swooping path that starts and ends with the two fireflies at the lower right. The fireflies form a pattern that creates an optical illusion of dots flickering from white to black, the illusion mimicking the effect of the firefly’s flickering light in the darkness.
The design is based on a space-filling curve, which is traced by the arc of the firefly's wings. At first seeming to be a simple grid, the self-similar structure of the firefly's path sets up a complexity that keeps our eyes roaming and moving across the image.
