Ottawa artist, inspired by landscapes in all seasons, by liminal times and spaces.
MessageAs I worked on this piece, I noticed the Green Man and Angels appearing. The Green Man, I have learned, re-emerged in the 12th century renaissance and was incorporated—as was the Black Madonna--into the light-filled Gothic Cathedrals.
Matthew Fox writes: “ One of the important archetypes of the Sacred Masculine—especially in a time of climate change—is that of the Green Man. The Green Man honors our relationship to Mother Earth and her creatures, especially the plant world… Is there a special marriage required today of the Green Man and the Black Madonna?” Fox asks, “ After all, the last time the Black Madonna emerged in force in Western culture was at the very time that the Green Man arrived–the twelfth century, the “only renaissance that worked in the West.”
As I learned more about her, I found that an image of the Black Madonna and child, which is found in many places, fit nicely in the "cosmic egg" in the painting. Of her, Fox writes: “The Black Madonna leads the way for she is the Universal Mother, fully accepting of the immense and praiseworthy diversity of our species in all its marvelous wonderfulness.“
